What greater compliment could there be for a rock band but to attest its distinctiveness and total independence? Isn’t it an unmistakable indication of true greatness that even rock fans who’ve been familiar with this band only for a few years aptly remark after the first verse of a new song: �No doubt about it, this can only be Pink Cream�? Pink Cream 69 have been cultivating their exceptional status for many years, and they reinforce their outstanding reputation all over again with every new album. And so we can confirm that ENDANGERED, the latest product of their efforts, bursts with refreshing creativity and is unmistakably and typically Pink Cream!
Every new album by the band from Karlsruhe sounds exciting and gripping, contemporary and modern, classic and yet somehow new, different, alive. The reason for their apparently never-ending source of inspiration lies in the band’s constellation, and in the technically accomplished abilities of all four members. Guitarist Alfred Koffler is without doubt among the best of his trade, a musician whose tasteful style refines every song that his band has ever come up with. Bassist Dennis Ward and drummer Kosta Zafiriou are a perfect rhythm section that is marked by an interaction of giving and taking. These three musicians founded Pink Cream 69 some fifteen years ago, and after a line-up change in the mid-Nineties they found an exceptionally talented vocalist in David Readman from Britain, who fits into this band like the last piece of a puzzle, rounding off the positive overall picture that the group presents. Readman has not only proved himself as a charismatic world-class frontman, but also as an imaginative composer.
On ENDANGERED, the band’s many talents once again come together in a homogenous overall sound. The opening track ‘Shout!’, the subsequent ‘Promised Land’ and ‘Trust the Wiseman’ or the impressive ‘Don’t Need Your Touch’ prove that this band is a lively rock act with fire and passion. Just how much Pink Cream 69 venture into atmospheric depths and create big emotions is revealed on the blazing rock ballad ‘In My Dreams’. At the same time, the band nail their political colours to the mast: the lyrics on ‘He Took The World’ are a critical analysis of power and its abuse. ENDANGERED is rounded off by a gripping cover version of the Who classic ‘Pinball Wizard’ and the bonus track ‘One Time Is Not Enough’, a song title that PC 69 fans would probably like to take literally. After all this is not a band whose shows you want to go to just once, you’ll find yourself seeing them again and again with increasing enthusiasm. Talking of concerts: tour plans have vaguely been announced for the beginning of 2001 (more on the subject on the official Pink Cream website under www.pinkcream69.com.
ENDANGERED was again produced by bassist Dennis Ward at the House Of Audio studios in Karlsdorf, where the successful predecessors Electrified and Sonic Dynamite were recorded under Ward’s direction, where he also worked on DC Cooper’s solo debut and will soon be overseeing the recordings of the impending Angra album. There's no need to comment on Ward’s qualities as a musician and sound engineer – the transparent and powerful sound on ENDANGERED speaks for itself. Once again everything is in the right place. Now all that’s lacking are the fans who can’t wait to listen to ENDANGERED. The days until the release will be counted impatiently.
